La storia del MERCATO a Tarvisio ha radici molto antiche.
Già nel 1456 il vescovo di Bamberga concedeva per l'abitato di Tarvisio
l'istituzione di una fiera annuale,
da tenersi in agosto, che lo rese molto importante nel territorio
elevando il villaggio a Borgo , che in seguito
a questo privilegio venne dotato di poteri giuridici e legislativi e con
diritto di fregiarsi di un proprio stemma.
Durante questa fiera si scambiavano e vendevano presumibilmente attrezzi
agricoli, arnesi per le botteghe artigiane,stoffe e finimenti per cavalli.
Alcuni secoli più tardi nel 1838 l'imperatore Ferdinando I° diede
autorizzazione all'allestimento di un mercato del bestiame da tenersi due volte l'anno regolamentando nel contempo il mercato delle
merci e concedendo anche per il secondo due date
nell'arco dei 12 mesi. Così, quando Tarvisio venne elevata a città nel 1909 la sua notorietà
crebbe ulteriormente ma soprattutto crebbero
l'importanza dei suoi mercati annuali.
Fu poi nel primo dopoguerra che nacque il fenomeno dell'ambulantato a
cadenza settimanale (il mercato si teneva di lunedì nella piazza antistante la chiesa) e col progressivo moltiplicarsi
dell'offerta delle merci attirò compratori e curiosi, anche da molto lontano. E'infatti noto che la maggioranza dei
frequentatori del
mercato sono d'oltr'alpe e tra di loro era conosciuto col nome di
SHANGAI. In pochi anni
questa divenne una realtà ragguardevole e il mercato diventò fisso e
giornaliero dal 1957 coinvolgendo
in questo
"fenomeno" ben106 famiglie che gestiscono, a tuttoggi, altrettante attività
commerciali spaziando nell'offerta delle merci dalle pellet-terie (giacche e pantaloni in pelle), alle calzature, ai portafogli, alle
cinture e borse, ai guanti, alla jeanseria e alla maglieria ai foulard e cravatte ai giocattoli e bigiotteria e alla frutta e verdura.
Nel 1985 si costruì definitivamente una struttura inamovibile e coperta
tale da consentire una migliore circolazione della
clientela anche in caso di maltempo, e offrendo nel contempo un'immagine
più consona ai tempi.

Tarvisio’s market history has really ancient roots.
In 1456 Bamberga’s bishop allowed the institution of an annual traid
fair, to hold in august, that permitted the village to became a suburb
and according to this privilege to get legal and legislative power and
besides this, even the proud of getting an own official badge.During
this fair the main trade was focused on farm tools, craftsman shop’s
equipment, stuffes and harness for horses.Some centuries later, in 1838,
emperor Ferdinand I gave the authorization to set up a livestock market
to hold 2 times yearly and was regulated in the meantime the market of
goods to which was allowed to be hold 2 times yearly too.In 1909
Tarvisio became a city and its prestige grew up and especially the fame
of the 2 markets.In the first post-war period was born the phenomenon of
weekly peddling ( the market was arranged every Monday in the square in
front of the church) and with the growing of goods supply, the market
attracted a lot of buyers and curious people, even people from really
far places.Infact is well known that the great part of the visitors of
the market came from beyond the Alps and the market was above named
SHANGAI.In a few years it became a considerable reality and the market
became since 1957 a fixed and daily market involving 106 families that
manage, still now, as many commercial activities which supply a wide
range of goods as leather clothes, footwear, wallets, belts, bags,
gloves, jeans, knitwear, foulards, ties, toys, jewellery and fruits and
vegetables.In
1985 was built a non removable and covered structure in order to permit
a better circulation of the customers even in case of bad weather.
